SUMATRA - THE INDONESIA`S BACKBONE

The great island of Sumatra has always formed a kind of pivotal `` backbone `` for the nation.
Sumatra also formed by longitudinal range of mountain called Bukit Barisan Range extend about 1.600 km in a northwest to southwesterly direction rising at several points above 3.000 m from the sea level, and there are about 90 volcanos in this range ,15 of this volcanos are active.
The majority of Sumatrans live in the long range of undulating foothills,plateaus,river basins and highland lakes along the island`s spine.
The Minangkabau and Bataks are the major ethnic group and some other minor one such as Gayo,Kerinci, Kubu, Rejang, Lampung and others .
Sumatra finest sights are the  blue green Lake Toba, a vast crater lake surrounding steep back Samosir Island, Bahorok - a world wild fund rehabilitation centre for Orang Utans, trains the apes to re-adopt the the jungle environment before releasing them in the wild, the Minagkabau Highland rising to a highpoint Mount Kerinci - 3.850 m, Nias Island which includes Simeulue,Batu ,Enggano and Mantawai have been world apart for half million years,their wildlife and human inhabitant have developed in isolation.
