IRIAN JAYA – PAPUA the LOST PARADISE OF SHANGRI
- LA
(Formerly Irian Jaya)
Irian
Jaya now days is known as West Papua and East Papua, undoubtedly
ranks as the most isolated and primitive region among the Indonesian
Archipelago. The native inhabitants of Papua are generally divided
into two distinet subgroup which is the coastal Austronesians and
the Highland Papuas, both are similar in appearance with dark skinned,
woolly haired and heavily bearded with facial features similar to
the Australians aborigin. The material culture practised by these
tribes depends very much on their inviroment like the Asmat Tribes
are skilled woodcarvers known for their strikingly graphic shields
, masks , ancestor totems and war canoes. The highland Dani Tribes
of the great Balliem valley are more adept cultivators who have
probably been terracing and irrigating their well manicured fields
and raising domestic pigs for centuries and they in turn are quite
distinct from numerus neighbouring tribes who rely on a trade in
arrowheads, cowry shells, animal skinn, pig teeth or Bird of Paradise
feathers. The temperature at the highland is very cold sometimes
reach about 5C but the Dani people wear virtually no clothing, girls
wear reedskirts, marriage women wrap themselves with a braided cord
and man sport only long tubular penis, sheaths made of dried yellow
gourds locally called `` koteka``. Armbands and throat patches
fashioned from pigs scrotums , barkcloth or matted spider webs ,
ward off evil spirit.
