Larantuka - Flores - East Nusa Tenggara

LARANTUKA is the gateway to the tightly packed chain of island to the east and it was  a Portuguese colony for about 300 years and Catholic rituals here reflect a great deal of Iberian influence.

Lembata is an island where weavers spin their own thread from home grown cotton and prepare their own dyes from herbal extracts.
Lamarela is also one of the very last traditional whaling hunter communities  on the planet,where the shallow draught sail and oar propelled wooden boats are used for whale hunting. When the whale is sighted,  a harpooner balances precariously on a narrow plank extending from the bow of the boat and then jump with his harpoon,thrusting it accurately into the whale`s back.
