North Sumatra - Belawan / Medan

Belawan is an important port of the Straits of Malacca in the north of Medan the capital city of North Sumatra Province. Tobacco, palm oil, tea and rubber are produced in large quantities,partiqularly around Medan.
The city founded in 1590 until now sturdy colonial architecture styles still dominate many of the cities in North Sumatra.
There are two groups of Bataks tribes in Medan,the southern Bataks ( Mandailing ) who are Moslem and the Northern Bataks (Toba, Karo) who are predominantly Protestant Christians ( due to influence of a very successful German missionary Ludwig Nommensen 1834 - 1918 ).

MEDAN  - Old City Tour.

A short drive to the centre of Medan city to visit Mesjid Raya the black domed Great Mosque, the 18th century Maimoon Sultan Deli`s Palace, Vihara Gunung Timur the main Chinese temple, then experience an exhilarating ride in a `becak motor` ( motor threecycle) and at last enjoy the night in Medan at Kesawan  Square.

BRASTAGI - The Country Side
Visiting the crocodile farm at Asam Kumbang 10 km from Medan, thence drive to delightfully cool and picturesque town of Brastagi, enroute stop at Lau Debuk a hot water and sulphur spring to enjoy a well earned soak in the steaming sulphur laden water and the nature reserved which lies on escarpment overlooking to the lowlands.

 


PARAPAT - A Relaxing atmosphere
Drive on the scenic back roads across the Karo Plateau to Parapat the skirts of the northeastern edge of the Toba caldera with enroute stop at fruits market selling luscious markisa ( passion fruits) and orange and flowers, thence on to Lingga Village - to see the glimpse of the way of life the Batak Karo tribes and their typical houses,Tongging Hills to view the northern part of the most biggest crater lake Toba and the 360 feet Sipiso Piso waterfall then visiting the Pematang Purba to see the traditional long house Rumah Bolon of the Batak Simalungun tribe.

LAKE  TOBA - The Deepest Lake  and Ancient Graveyard

Boat are boarded for crossing of this 450 meter deep lake to the island of Samosir,to visit the village of Ambarita  the ancient stone furniture as`the remnant of the magalhitic culture of Batak Toba and the longhouse of Batak Toba`s King in simanindo village. Proceed by boat to Tomok village where carved statue stand in graveyard as memorial to the late King of Toba. Watch the performance of the impressive war games at Sigale gale.

BOHOROK  -  ORANGUTAN FEEDING CAMP.
Just about two hours drive from Medan to get close to orang-utans and 40 minutes hike from Bukit Lawang village to the camps with accompanied by the park rangers, experienced yourself to feed the orang utans at their habitat.
